Oakville Hydro Energy Services Inc.
In 2007, Oakville Hydro, in partnership with Halton Region, developed and now operates a facility to generate electricity from landfill gas. This facility is located at the Halton Waste Management site on Bronte Road, north of Dundas Street.
A by-product of decomposing garbage, landfill gas is an environmental pollutant and a major contributor to global warming. Landfill gas is approximately 50% methane gas, which is the main component of natural gas.
Using proven and reliable technology, the gas emitted from the regional landfill site is collected, "scrubbed" of carbon dioxide (CO2) and used as fuel for internal combustion engines. These engines in turn drive electrical generators that feed electricity into the provincial power grid. The process takes a harmful pollutant and converts it into a source of renewable energy.
This project is an important demonstration of sustainable development. It produces both local and provincial benefits by:
The Oakville landfill operation is expected to produce enough gas to generate electricity for over 20 years.
